As lawsuits involving cancer in the fight against Roundup, the weedkiller, continue to draw attention, Bayer – which became Roundup’s owner after it purchased Monsanto in the year prior has made plansto invest over $5.6 billion in the next ten years to create new strategies to fight the weeds.

Bayer’s announcement comes as the company tries to meet the competing deadlines for appeals in three necessary Roundup trials. Decisions in each of these cases have been against Bayer. They include the case of a California jury that recently handed out a couple of billion dollars after finding that exposure to Roundup caused the diagnosis of cancer in them.

Before it was sold to Germany-based Bayer, Monsanto was headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri and is now in the midst of a new round of trials. Sharlean Gordon, a woman in her 50s, claims that Roundup has caused cancer in her body and will be going to court in March. The judge who presided had recently denied Monsanto’s request for summary judgment before trial and also rejected the company’s request not to include the opinions of a variety of experts. The case was filed in July of 2017 for the plaintiffs, which is more than 75 is the first case of this group to go to trial.

ROUNDUP CASE TAKING TOLL on COMPANY

At present, more than 13,400 plaintiffs, including several customers from The Justice Now, have brought lawsuits to Bayer across the U.S. In each of these lawsuits, the plaintiffs have contracted non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, or a different type of cancer as a result of the exposure of Roundup, or other weed killers that contain Glyphosate.

Glyphosate has been identified as cancer-causing by The World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer and California’s Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment. It has been sprayed more frequently than any other chemical used in agriculture in the past.

This has caused businesses like Costco to discontinue selling Roundup, and the pressure is increasing on retailers like Home Depot and Lowe’s to stop carrying the weed killer that has been criticized for its controversial nature.

Environmentalists, in turn, are becoming more active. Alongside their assertions against Roundup, environmental groups are concerned about tiny amounts of the same cancer-causing chemical, Glyphosate,in snacks and cereal like Cheerios.
