When the PACT Act was signed into law on August 10, 2022, it started the clock ticking on victims’ window to file lawsuits under the Camp Lejeune Justice Act (CLJA). This means that veterans and individuals who were exposed to toxic chemicals at Camp Lejeune have until August 10, 2024 to file their lawsuits to receive compensation.
Anyone under the law who “resided, worked or was otherwise exposed” to Camp Lejeune drinking water for at least 30 days in the period between August 1st, 1953 between December 31, 1987, and August 1, 1953, could be entitled to claim damages. This group includes:
Perchloroethylene (PCE), a colourless liquid commonly used in dry cleaning, contaminated the Tarawa Terrace Treatment Plant. The waste disposal practises of an off-base dry cleaning company were discovered to be the source of this contamination. According to the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, PCE levels at the Tarawa Terrace Treatment Plant far exceeded current standards between November 1957 and February 1987.
Trichloroethylene (TCE), a volatile anesthetic, contaminated the water at the Hadnot Point Treatment Plant. TCE contamination is thought to have been caused by underground storage tank leaks, industrial area spills, and water disposal sites.

The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), a federal public health agency, reviewed scientific and medical evidence linking Camp Lejeune’s water contamination to a variety of health problems.
The original ATSDR report, as well as subsequent scientific studies, linked over a dozen diseases to chemicals in the camp’s drinking water.
